Atiku Mourns Veteran Actor Kola Oyewo, Describes Him as a Giant of African Theatre
Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has expressed sadness over the death of veteran Nollywood actor and theatre icon Dr Kola Oyewo, describing him as a legendary figure whose impact on African drama will remain unforgettable.
Oyewo’s death was announced on Friday by his son, Adetoyese Oyewo, bringing an end to the life of a respected actor, scholar, and teacher who dedicated decades to the growth of Nigerian theatre and film.
Reacting to the news, Atiku, in a statement shared on his X handle on Saturday, praised the late actor’s contributions to the arts and highlighted his memorable performances.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Kola Oyewo, a legendary thespian and scholar of African drama,” Atiku wrote.
He described Oyewo’s portrayal of King Lapite in the classic Nigerian film Saworoide as one of the roles that cemented his place in history, adding that his creativity and teachings had left a lasting mark on generations.
“His iconic role as King Lapite in the timeless ‘Saworoide’ immortalised his immense talent and teachings,” he said.
Atiku noted that the theatre industry had lost a remarkable talent whose influence extended beyond entertainment, describing Oyewo as a dramatist and teacher who used storytelling to promote social awareness.
“A great void has been left in Theatre Arts. He will be sorely missed by lovers of African stories worldwide,” he added.
The passing of Kola Oyewo has continued to attract tributes from across Nigeria’s entertainment and cultural communities, with many celebrating his dedication to preserving African identity through performance and education.
His legacy as one of the pillars of Nigerian theatre will continue to live on through the countless actors, students, and audiences he inspired.
