Peter Obi Explained His Money, And Davido Had A View

Peter Obi Explained His Money, And Davido Had A View

Music

Peter Obi, the NDC candidate, has explained how he built his wealth, pointing to major retail franchises and bank shareholdings, in a televised interview that has been circulating. A broadcaster's challenge to other Nigerian politicians to account for theirs the same way drew a response from Davido.

Why a musician's comment is the story

Because Davido's audience is younger and larger than any political programme's, and because Nigerian politics has spent a decade discovering that endorsement from the music industry moves more people than a newspaper column does. When a candidate's finances are being discussed, the comment that travels furthest is usually not from an economist.

The challenge underneath it. Explain the source of your wealth, specifically, with dates and instruments. Obi has made that answerable for himself: a trading business, franchises, bank shares, all of which leave a paper trail. The reason the challenge has force is that most Nigerian officeholders could not produce the equivalent, and everybody watching knows it.

What can and cannot be verified

Claim typeCheckable?
Shareholdings in a listed bankYes, in filings
Ownership of a retail franchiseYes, at CAC
Asset declarations by officeholdersFiled with the CCB, and not public

The third row is the reform nobody campaigns on.

Nigeria requires its officeholders to declare their assets and does not require anybody to be able to read the declaration.

The thing to hold on to

Wealth that predates office is a different question to wealth that appears during it, and the two get deliberately blurred by everybody in this argument. A candidate who can point to a business built before politics is making a checkable claim. Making it checkable, publicly, is the standard that would be worth adopting from this exchange, and it will not be.
