From Shomolu Hustle to Rising Star: Ayo Maff Opens Up About Leaving Home at 16 to Chase Bigger Dreams
Nigerian singer Ayo Maff has recently shared a heartfelt glimpse into his early struggles and what pushed him to leave home at just 16 years old.
In an interview with Hip TV, the 19-year-old fast-rising artiste revealed that growing up in the bustling Shomolu area of Lagos wasn’t easy, but it shaped his music and his spirit.
“Life in Shomolu is hard, fun and also exciting. Without living in Shomolu I wouldn’t have the experiences of singing about them. I wouldn’t have truly seen reality of life that shaped me,” Ayo Maff said.
The first child in his family, Ayo Maff made the tough decision to leave his parents’ home in pursuit of a better future—not just for himself, but for his entire family.
“I looked around and realised that I had to go out and make it for these people,” he explained. “So, I just left to stay with my friend for one year and a few months. My mum was concerned when I was leaving, but I assured her that I would be coming to check on them.”
