Superboy Cheque Opens Up About Acne Struggles That Almost Ended His Music Career
Nigerian rapper and singer Superboy Cheque has revealed how his battle with severe acne threatened to derail his music career and affected his self-confidence.
Speaking in a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, Cheque recounted the lengths he went to in an attempt to manage his skin condition, including using makeup that nearly disfigured his face.
“I struggled with acne years back. It was terrible. My desperation to cure it led me to buy a makeup that almost disfigured my face. It was embarrassing. I almost quit music. I couldn’t even approach women then,” Cheque said.
He explained that the pressure increased after his breakthrough hit *Zoom* and his signing to a record label, as he had to appear in interviews and on camera regularly. “I am a perfectionist. So, I went to get a makeup from a store to clear it, but instead it almost disfigured my face. I woke up one morning and realised that my whole face has been damaged,” he recalled.
The experience, however, inspired his hit collaboration History with Fireboy DML and helped shape his music journey. Cheque also noted that the struggle impacted his social life and confidence around cameras.
Opinion: The Hidden Battles Behind the Spotlight
Cheque’s story underscores an often-overlooked challenge for public figures: personal insecurities and health issues can weigh heavily on mental health and professional performance. Acne, though common, can have serious psychological effects, particularly in industries where image and self-presentation are constantly scrutinized.
His candid admission also highlights resilience. Instead of allowing insecurity to end his career, Cheque turned his struggles into creative inspiration, producing music that resonates with authenticity. It serves as a reminder that many celebrities’ paths to success are shaped not only by talent but also by personal struggles they overcome behind the scenes.
For young fans facing similar issues, Cheque’s journey is both a cautionary tale about the dangers of unregulated cosmetic solutions and an encouraging story of perseverance and self-acceptance
