“It’s Still Doable” – Eguavoen Backs Super Eagles to Qualify for 2026 World Cup Despite Rocky Start
Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has issued a rallying call to Nigerians, urging optimism as the national team fights to stay in contention for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In an interview with ACL Sports, the 59-year-old football veteran—who briefly stepped in following Finidi George’s resignation—said he’s confident that qualification is still within reach, despite Nigeria currently sitting fourth in their qualifying group.
“It’s a tight rope we’re walking, but everything is possible,” Eguavoen said.
“With the boys we have now and every Nigerian coming together, it is doable. I’m 100% sure because the players want to be at the World Cup.”
The former international also emphasized a “one game at a time” mentality, encouraging the team to treat every upcoming fixture like a final.
⚽ The Stakes Are High — But So Is the Hope
The Super Eagles’ slow start to the qualifying campaign has sparked national concern, especially with only one team per group guaranteed a spot at the 2026 tournament. But with Eric Chelle now officially in charge and Eguavoen’s tactical support behind the scenes, Nigeria’s World Cup dream is still alive—just fragile.
The task is simple but daunting: win every remaining match. And while it sounds like a tall order, Nigerian football has a history of rising when the odds are against it.
🗣️ Our Take: The Time for Criticism is Over—It’s Time to Back the Team
It’s easy to dwell on what went wrong in the earlier fixtures—but as Eguavoen rightly said, the mindset must now shift to what comes next. Nigeria’s squad is bursting with talent—from Osimhen to Lookman, from Iheanacho to Nwabali. The pieces are there.
What’s needed now is unity, strategy, and belief.
The road to 2026 may be steep, but it’s not blocked. The Super Eagles need not just goals—but grit, discipline, and full national support.
