Onazi Backs Super Eagles to Soar Past Gabon in 2026 World Cup Playoff
Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has expressed strong confidence that Nigeria will overcome Gabon in next month’s all-important 2026 World Cup play-off clash.
The Super Eagles secured their spot in the African playoffs after a resounding 4–0 victory over Benin Republic, reigniting hope of a World Cup return after what had been a shaky start to the qualifying campaign.
Speaking to Footy-Africa, Onazi said he has seen a new fire and sense of purpose in the team under Eric Chelle’s guidance.
“A lot went wrong at the start of the qualifiers, but now, with the passion and determination the team has shown, you can see they understand what it means to play at the World Cup,” Onazi stated.
“The players have shown commitment, and I believe that drive will take them through.”
Nigeria will face Gabon on November 13, with the winner progressing to meet either Cameroon or DR Congo for a chance at Africa’s sole intercontinental playoff ticket.
Opinion:
Onazi’s optimism mirrors that of millions of Nigerian fans who have begun to believe again in the Super Eagles. The team’s recent performances — marked by energy, cohesion, and a rekindled fighting spirit — have brought back the hunger that once made Nigeria a powerhouse on the continent.
But Gabon will not be an easy opponent. With players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang capable of changing games in an instant, the Eagles must approach the tie with focus and humility, not just confidence.
Still, there’s something different about this new Super Eagles side — a unity that feels genuine and a desire to redeem lost pride. If they can carry the same intensity that humbled Benin Republic, Nigeria’s dream of returning to the World Cup stage in 2026 may just be within reach.
For now, as Onazi says, it’s not just about talent — it’s about heart, commitment, and national pride. 🇳🇬🔥
