“He Ain’t Got No Money” — Tyler Perry Opens Up on Cutting Off Entitled Relatives and Raising His Son with Discipline
Billionaire filmmaker Tyler Perry is known for creating one of Hollywood’s most successful franchises — but behind the glam and wealth, the 55-year-old mogul is fiercely grounded in values of discipline, self-reliance, and earned success.
Speaking during a candid conversation with gospel artist Kirk Franklin on Den of Kings, Perry revealed how he cut off financial support for some extended family members, including an aunt who refused to take a job he offered her.
“She would always call asking for money,” Perry said. “But I told her… ‘I want to help you build something, not just hand out money like welfare.’”
Eventually, he had to fire her:
“You want me to hand you the money, but you don't want to work for it? Well, you gotta go.”
💬 “I Don’t Want to Handicap Anyone”
Even in grief, Perry stayed true to these values. Following his mother’s death in 2009, he informed certain relatives she had asked him to support that they had 60 days to find jobs before the financial help would stop.
“It wasn’t about how much money they’d earn… It was about giving them pride, purpose. That’s what I would want someone to do for me.”
🧒🏽 Raising Aman the Tyler Perry Way
Despite being worth an estimated $1.4 billion (according to Forbes), Perry is ensuring his 10-year-old son Aman doesn’t grow up entitled. He insists on chores before allowance and recently made Aman fly coach after he complained about commercial flights.
“He ain’t got no money,” Perry said bluntly. “He’s not going to be one of those ridiculously spoiled rich kids. I can’t stand that.”
Together with Aman’s mother, Ethiopian model Gelila Bekele, Perry is instilling humility, gratitude, and work ethic—qualities he believes will keep his son grounded in a world where wealth can easily create disconnect.
✨ Opinion: Real Wealth is Responsibility
In a culture where many chase wealth for comfort and convenience, Perry's mindset is a masterclass in legacy-building. He understands that money without discipline becomes a curse, not a blessing.
His story resonates with anyone striving to balance generosity with boundaries, and parenting with purpose. Perry reminds us that character, not currency, is the real inheritance worth passing on.
