Ashleigh Plumptre Raises Alarm Over Facebook Impersonation
Super Falcons star defender Ashleigh Plumptre has issued a strong warning to fans and followers after discovering multiple cases of online impersonation, particularly on Facebook.
The alert came shortly after Nigeria’s emphatic 3-0 win over Tunisia in their opening match of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where Plumptre played a key role in maintaining a clean sheet for the team.
🗣️ “Fake Accounts Are Promising People Money”
Speaking to Ademola Victor TV, the England-born Nigerian international shared her concern:
“There have been a lot of cases where people impersonate me, taking my name and saying things. There’s a Facebook account that’s being taken down, but it is promising people money and things like that – and that’s just not true,” Plumptre said.
She emphasized that any Facebook account currently bearing her name is fake, clarifying that while she once had a personal account, she hasn’t used it in years.
💻 A Growing Issue in African Sports
Plumptre’s situation highlights the growing threat of online impersonation targeting athletes, celebrities, and public figures — particularly women. As fame rises, so do cyber scams.
Fraudsters create fake profiles, offer fake giveaways, solicit money, or impersonate stars to manipulate unsuspecting fans. And sadly, many fall for these schemes due to trust in the public figure’s image.
💬 Opinion: Protecting the Face Behind the Fame
This isn’t just about one player; it's about digital safety in the sports community. Ashleigh Plumptre — known for her brilliance on the pitch and humility off it — shouldn’t have to deal with fake personas misusing her identity.
Her transparency is a wake-up call for fans to be more vigilant and for tech platforms like Meta (Facebook) to do more to protect verified identities.
