“How Are You Nigerian?” — Ashleigh Plumptre Reflects on First Super Falcons Camp Experience
Al-Ittihad defender Ashleigh Plumptre has shared a heartfelt and revealing moment from her first time in camp with Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, recalling how her teammates initially reacted with curiosity and surprise.
Now 27, Plumptre had previously represented England’s Young Lionesses, earning over 25 youth caps, before making the bold switch to play for Nigeria — a decision made possible through her paternal grandfather, which established her eligibility. After FIFA approved her nationality switch, she was recruited by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in 2021.
In a recent interview with Lagos Talks 91.3, the former Leicester City star described how she felt walking into a team where her presence was both welcomed and questioned — particularly due to her appearance and background.
“I do remember my first session [with the Super Falcons] because I went for a header against a player called Desire,” she said, referring to veteran striker Desire Oparanozie.
“Everybody didn’t really know what to expect from me at first. I think for them it was a rarity.
They were obviously questioning like, ‘So, how are you Nigerian?’”
With a chuckle, she added:
“Normally when I get that question, I just show them a picture of my dad, and they’re like, ‘Oh, okay.’”
Blending Heritage, Proving Identity
Plumptre’s experience reflects a broader reality faced by many players of dual heritage: the need to prove their belonging — not just through paperwork, but through personality, passion, and performance.
In her case, she quickly dispelled doubts. Her commitment on and off the pitch — from powerful tackles to singing the national anthem with pride — has earned her the respect and admiration of fans and teammates alike.
More Than Just a Jersey
Plumptre has become a symbol of how identity is deeper than skin tone or accent. Her connection to Nigeria may have started through bloodlines, but it has grown through her spirit, loyalty, and fearless football.
Her honesty about the early skepticism from teammates offers a raw and relatable insight into the realities of joining a team where you're seen as different. Yet, in just a short time, she's become one of the Super Falcons' most trusted defenders.
Opinion – Heritage Meets Heart
Ashleigh Plumptre’s journey to becoming a Super Falcon is one that beautifully captures the fusion of global heritage and local pride. Her story reminds us that being Nigerian — or African — is not bound by a single look, accent, or location. It's bound by shared values, love for the culture, and willingness to wear the green-white-green with dignity.
