“I Couldn’t Even Toast Women” – Saka Opens Up On Struggles With Poverty, Rejection and Passion

“I Couldn’t Even Toast Women” – Saka Opens Up On Struggles With Poverty, Rejection and Passion

Veteran Nollywood actor and comedian Afeez Oyetoro, popularly known as Saka, has shared an emotional and deeply inspiring story of his early life in acting — a journey marked by rejection, poverty, and perseverance.

Speaking during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Saka reflected on a time when acting brought him neither money nor recognition, and how this affected both his confidence and romantic life.

🗣️ “I didn’t have confidence. It took me a long time to start toasting women… Acting then had no money, no glory. It was just passion.”

💔 “You Must Own Two Cars First” – When Love Had a Price

In a moment that both amused and saddened listeners, Saka recalled how one woman he wanted to marry gave him an ultimatum — he had to own two cars before she’d even consider marriage.

“Something told me, Afeez, this is not your wife. I ran away from there.”

At the time, Saka couldn’t afford a car, a suit, or even basic comforts. He was acting purely out of love for the craft, not profit. In fact, he noted that society looked down on actors, and no one taught them how to turn passion into profit.

✍🏽 Opinion: This Is the Story Behind the Smile

Saka’s story is a powerful reminder that many entertainers who make us laugh today once cried in silence. His humility and honesty expose a hard truth in our society: that many young creatives are ridiculed for choosing art over more “stable” professions, even though those same talents often bring them fame later in life.

Women rejected him, not because he wasn’t good, but because he had no visible success yet. That speaks volumes about how we define “future” in relationships — is it material, or is it character?

Today, Saka is respected nationwide, both as a comic legend and as a lecturer at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education. He’s married to Olaide Oyetoro, and they are blessed with three beautiful children.

❤️ From Laughter to Lessons

Saka’s story is more than a Nollywood tale — it’s a blueprint for resilience. He teaches us that:

  • Passion may not pay immediately — but it will, if you stay true.

  • Rejection is redirection — the right person will see beyond your current lack.

  • You don’t need two cars to be valuable — you need purpose and vision.

📢 Social Media Reacts

Fans and fellow actors have taken to social media to celebrate Saka’s humility:

  • “This man is the definition of grace. From zero to legendary!”

  • “We need to teach young people that purpose is more important than pressure.”

  • “One of the most genuine actors Nigeria ever produced. May his kind multiply.”
