Queens of the Court! Nigeria’s D’Tigress Win 5th Consecutive Women’s AfroBasket Title, Qualify for 2026 World Cup

Nigeria’s D’Tigress have once again stamped their dominance on the continent, clinching a record-extending fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket title after a resounding 78-64 victory over Mali in the final.

The victory marks the seventh overall AfroBasket title for Nigeria’s women’s basketball team and extends their unbeaten run in the tournament to 29 straight games, a feat unmatched in African women’s basketball.

A Fierce Battle, a Glorious Finish

From tip-off, it was clear that D’Tigress meant business. Coach Rena Wakama’s squad took early control, edging the Malians 26-21 in the first quarter. Though Mali responded fiercely in the second quarter — which ended in a 41-41 stalemate — Nigeria’s class began to shine through.

In the third quarter, D’Tigress regained momentum and never looked back, pushing the lead to 61-56 before sealing the win in dominant fashion.

🏀 Final Score: Nigeria 78 – Mali 64

Ticket to the World

With the win, D’Tigress have secured automatic qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany. Other African hopefuls — Mali, South Africa, and Senegal — will now head to the playoffs in March 2026 to battle for a World Cup slot.

Opinion – A Dynasty in the Making

D’Tigress aren’t just champions — they are building a continental dynasty. Under Wakama’s leadership, Nigeria’s team has found the perfect blend of athleticism, teamwork, and grit. Their dominance is no fluke; it’s a result of years of investment, unity, and an unshakable winning mentality.

As the world turns its eyes toward Germany 2026, one thing is clear: Nigeria is no longer just a force in Africa — they are ready to challenge the world.
