President Tinubu Rewards D’Tigress with $100K, Apartments, and National Honours After AfroBasket Triumph
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lavished generous rewards on Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic victory at the recently concluded 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
Each player on the championship-winning squad will receive $100,000 and a new apartment, while every coach on the team will take home $50,000, the presidency announced.
In addition, Tinubu conferred on every member of the team the prestigious national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) — a move seen as a formal recognition of their outstanding service to the nation.
🏀 D’Tigress: Dominating the Court and Making History
The Nigerian women’s basketball team recently clinched their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and have now qualified for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup to be hosted in Germany. Their success solidifies Nigeria’s place as a dominant force in African women’s basketball, with an unbeaten streak of 29 games in the tournament.
💬 Opinion – Deserved Applause or Political Optics?
While many Nigerians are celebrating the president’s gesture as well-deserved recognition for D’Tigress' hard-earned victory, the announcement comes just days after a public uproar over a similar $100,000 reward to the Super Falcons, raising concerns about fairness, timing, and political motives.
Still, rewarding sporting excellence with both financial and national honours sends a strong message of support for women in sports, an area that has often been sidelined despite outstanding achievements.
🇳🇬 A New Era for Women’s Sports in Nigeria?
Whether it’s D’Tigress on the basketball court or the Super Falcons on the football pitch, Nigerian women are lifting trophies and flying the flag high. With gestures like this from the presidency, the hope is that more structural support, investment, and visibility will follow.
