Mikel Obi Tips Chelsea for Premier League Glory, Names Liverpool and Arsenal as Rivals

Mikel Obi Tips Chelsea for Premier League Glory, Names Liverpool and Arsenal as Rivals

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has backed his old club to go all the way and win the Premier League title this season.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, the former Nigeria international described Chelsea as the “best team in the league right now”, praising their playing style under new manager Enzo Maresca.

Mikel acknowledged that Liverpool and Arsenal will also be in the title race but insisted Chelsea have what it takes to edge them out.

“I think it’s between Liverpool and Chelsea, we have a good chance of winning it. Right now if you look at what team you think can beat Liverpool, I say Chelsea — the way we play. We are the best team in terms of playing out from the back,” Mikel said.

The 2012 Champions League winner also noted that Arsenal’s improved squad depth leaves Mikel Arteta with no excuses this season, but he still fancies his former club to come out on top.

“We can be there come the end of the season so it’s between us and Liverpool. Arsenal always will be there,” he added.

Currently, Liverpool lead the Premier League table after three games, with Chelsea sitting just behind in second place.

Opinion: Is Mikel Obi’s Chelsea Optimism Justified?

Mikel Obi’s loyalty to Chelsea is unquestionable, but his confidence in the Blues might raise eyebrows among fans and pundits. Yes, Maresca has brought a refreshing style of play, and Chelsea look sharper, hungrier, and more cohesive than in previous seasons. However, the Premier League is a marathon, not a sprint.

Liverpool under Klopp remain ruthless, Arsenal are steadily growing stronger, and Manchester City — curiously absent from Mikel’s prediction — are still the benchmark for consistency. For Chelsea to truly mount a title challenge, they’ll need not just style but resilience when the season hits its toughest patches.

Still, hearing such faith from a club legend like Mikel is bound to excite Chelsea fans. If Maresca keeps his side disciplined and firing, maybe, just maybe, Mikel’s bold prophecy won’t be far off.
