Amorim Shrugs Off Garnacho’s Old Trafford Return Ahead of Chelsea Clash

Amorim Shrugs Off Garnacho’s Old Trafford Return Ahead of Chelsea Clash

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has dismissed talk of Alejandro Garnacho’s return to Old Trafford as Chelsea prepare to face the Red Devils in the Premier League this weekend.

The 20-year-old Argentine winger left United in the summer after a fallout with Amorim following the club’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. He forced through a £40 million move to rivals Chelsea, where he has since been eased into action with substitute appearances against Brentford in the Premier League and Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Now on the verge of making his first start for the Blues, Garnacho’s return to Manchester has generated headlines. But Amorim appeared unfazed when quizzed about the reunion.

“Garnacho is not our player, I’m focused on our players,” Amorim said during his pre-match press conference.

“I’m really happy with Mason [Mount] and [Matheus] Cunha returning. The rest, talk to the Chelsea manager.”

United, who currently sit 14th in the league after four matches, are desperate to secure just their second win of the campaign, while Chelsea are chasing their third victory of the season.

Opinion: Amorim’s Indifference — Genuine Focus or Hidden Distraction?

Ruben Amorim’s blunt dismissal of Garnacho’s return could be read in two ways. On the surface, it reflects focus and professionalism — a manager determined not to dwell on the past, especially when his own team is struggling in the league. With Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha back, Amorim has little reason to look over his shoulder.

Yet, there is also an undercurrent of tension. Garnacho left United not quietly, but amid controversy and fractured relationships. For many fans, his departure remains fresh, and seeing him line up in Chelsea blue at Old Trafford will sting. Whether Amorim admits it or not, the spotlight on Garnacho will inevitably cast a shadow over Saturday’s game.

For Garnacho, the stage is set for a statement performance. For Amorim, ignoring the noise is easy in words — but if Garnacho inspires Chelsea to victory, the narrative may be much harder to silence.
