From Lagos traffic to the law: Obi Cubana celebrates viral hawker, Jeremiah, as he graduates

Nigerian businessman and philanthropist, Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, has celebrated the inspiring success of viral Lagos hawker, Ekuma Jeremiah, who has now graduated with a law degree.

Jeremiah rose to fame in 2022 after he was captured on video handing money to inmates inside a Nigerian Correctional Service vehicle in Ajah, Lagos. The heartwarming gesture caught national attention, drawing praise and ultimately changing the young man’s life.

Among those touched was Obi Cubana, who extended support by offering Jeremiah a scholarship and other opportunities. Reflecting on the journey via Instagram on Monday, Cubana revealed that Jeremiah was given several lucrative offers at the time but chose to remain steadfast in his education.

“On January 19, 2022, when opportunities were placed before you, you chose education! You made the best choice. Today, you are a 2025 law graduate,” Cubana wrote.

He commended Jeremiah’s determination, noting that while quick comfort was tempting, his decision to pursue education has now secured him a stronger foundation for the future.

Opinion:
Jeremiah’s story is more than just a personal triumph—it is a testament to the power of resilience, vision, and delayed gratification. In a society where many young people are pressured to chase quick wealth, his choice to prioritize education over immediate financial gain stands out as an important lesson.

It also highlights the impact of kindness and mentorship. Without Obi Cubana’s timely support, Jeremiah’s dreams might have been derailed. This shows how much difference well-channeled philanthropy can make in the lives of young Nigerians who only need a helping hand to rewrite their story.

From hawking on Lagos streets to donning the gown of a law graduate, Jeremiah embodies hope for many struggling youths—that no matter the starting point, discipline and the right choices can pave the way to greatness. His journey is proof that education remains one of the most powerful tools for transformation, both for individuals and for society at large.

As Cubana concluded, “Congratulations Jerry, the world is yours!”—and indeed, with stories like his, the world is reminded that dreams, when nurtured with perseverance and opportunity, truly come alive.
