Phil Jones Explains Why Ruben Amorim Has Left Kobbie Mainoo Out of Manchester United’s Starting XI

Phil Jones Explains Why Ruben Amorim Has Left Kobbie Mainoo Out of Manchester United’s Starting XI

Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has shed light on why manager Ruben Amorim has yet to include midfielder Kobbie Mainoo in his Premier League starting XI this season.

Despite being one of United’s brightest prospects, Mainoo has remained an unused substitute in key fixtures against Arsenal and Fulham.

Speaking to Metro UK, Jones suggested Amorim’s decision is tactical rather than a reflection of Mainoo’s ability:

“If they [Mainoo and Fernandes] play together it will be due to an injury. I don’t think the manager likes having them play together for the reason I mentioned earlier — both of them are not the most mobile. Kobbie is sharp and strong, but over a 90-minute game, that is where the manager is looking and saying we might need someone else.”

Opinion: A Test of Patience for Mainoo — and Amorim’s Tactical Gamble

Phil Jones’ comments highlight the reality of modern football management: talent alone doesn’t guarantee a starting role. Mainoo, who has quickly become a fan favorite for his composure and strength in midfield, finds himself sidelined not because of a lack of quality but due to tactical caution.

Ruben Amorim is a coach who prioritizes balance. In his system, mobility and pressing endurance are crucial, and pairing Mainoo with Bruno Fernandes might leave gaps in transitions. From a managerial perspective, this makes sense — but from a fan’s point of view, it feels like holding back one of United’s most promising talents.

The challenge here is timing. Mainoo is young and eager, while United are desperate for creativity and control in midfield. Amorim’s gamble is that protecting him now will benefit both the player and the team later. However, fans know football is often about seizing the moment. Leaving a gifted midfielder on the bench too long risks stunting his momentum — and perhaps even affecting his confidence.

Ultimately, the coming weeks will reveal whether Amorim sticks to his cautious approach or bows to pressure to unleash Mainoo. One thing is certain: when the teenager finally gets his chance, all eyes will be on him to prove that he deserves a permanent spot in United’s midfield.
