Scholes Slams Amorim’s Handling of Mainoo, Says Youngster Should Consider Leaving Man United

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has sharply criticised current manager, Ruben Amorim, over his handling of rising midfield star Kobbie Mainoo.

Amorim, while speaking to the media earlier in the week, acknowledged Mainoo’s talent and insisted he is capable of starting games — but still chose to back veteran Casemiro ahead of the England international. That comment has clearly not gone down well with Scholes.

The former midfielder reposted Amorim’s remarks on his Instagram story and didn’t hold back, expressing fears that a brilliant academy graduate could be stifled instead of nurtured.

“The kid is being ruined, not being played in a team that can’t control a game of football,” Scholes blasted.
“Hate seeing home grown players leave but it’s probably best for him now, enough is enough.”

Scholes’ frustration reflects a growing concern among fans who believe Mainoo should be central to United’s rebuild — not playing a secondary role behind ageing stars.

Opinion: Protect the Future, Don’t Bench It

Kobbie Mainoo is not just another talent — he is one of Manchester United’s brightest sparks in recent memory. Technically smart, fearless on the ball, and mature beyond his age, he represents exactly what the club has needed: energy, identity, hope.

So when a club legend like Scholes worries that Mainoo is being “ruined,” it sends a strong message.

United cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of the past — where gifted youngsters were either overused too quickly or sidelined until they slipped away into other clubs’ success stories. Mainoo needs trust, minutes, and a tactical environment that allows him to flourish.

Supporting experienced players is understandable, but prioritising the future should be non-negotiable, especially at a club historically built on its youth.

If United wants to rise again, nurturing their own jewel should not even be up for debate. Otherwise, the fear Scholes expresses might become another painful chapter in the club’s recent history — watching a star shine brightest elsewhere.

United fans want progress. And progress begins with Mainoo on the pitch, not warming the bench.
