Toyin Lawani Alleges Medical Negligence at Euracare Hospital, Shares Harrowing Experience

Popular Nigerian fashion designer and entrepreneur Toyin Lawani has publicly accused Euracare Hospital in Lagos of mismanaging her care following a spine surgery, leaving her with severe complications that continue to affect her health.

In a series of Instagram posts on Sunday, the founder of Tiannah Empire detailed a harrowing ordeal that began with her visit to the private hospital for spine surgery. According to Lawani, she lost the use of her legs, developed a lung infection, and experienced multiple life-threatening complications despite spending nearly N100 million on treatment.

“Euracare Hospital, your cup is finally full… You go spend close to 100m for hospital & they still mismanage your health,” she wrote. Lawani explained that after her initial procedure, she had to undergo emergency reoperations due to lung bleeding and complications, including a tracheotomy that damaged her vocal cords. Even after being transferred to the UK for further care, she revealed that additional surgeries were necessary to address lingering infections and complications.

Lawani also threatened legal action against the hospital, saying: “They thought I was joking when I said I was going to sue, but I said they should just wait first. When I’m stronger I will tell my story.”

From an observer’s perspective, Lawani’s revelations highlight a broader concern about patient safety and accountability in private healthcare institutions. Even high-profile patients with access to substantial resources are not immune to complications, raising questions about medical oversight, post-operative care, and transparency in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

While the full facts of the case will emerge through legal channels or investigations, this public disclosure serves as a stark reminder that patients must be vigilant, seek multiple opinions when needed, and that healthcare providers bear a profound responsibility for their patients’ well-being. Lawani’s courage in speaking out may inspire others to demand accountability and improvements in medical care standards across the country.
