Portable Arraigned on Nine-Count Charge, Remanded in Custody by Ogun Court

Portable Arraigned on Nine-Count Charge, Remanded in Custody by Ogun Court

Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, was arraigned on Monday at the Federal High Court in Ota, Ogun State, over a nine-count criminal charge bordering on assault, theft, causing harm and resisting arrest.

According to the Ogun State Police spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the arraignment followed a viral video that surfaced on Sunday showing the singer in police custody. The case reportedly stems from a complaint filed by his estranged partner, Ashabi Simple.

The prosecution alleged that Portable assaulted Ashabi, several police officers, and other individuals at his bar in Iyana Ilogbo on New Year’s Day. Those listed as alleged victims include Ileyemi Damilola, Akinyanju Oluwabusayomi, Olowu Olumide, Demilade Ogunniyi and Ebuka Odah.

Portable is also accused of stealing a Mercedes-Benz E300, valued at N12 million, which allegedly belongs to Ileyemi Damilola and was purchased from Wally Dex Auto. Two siblings of Ashabi Simple reportedly testified in court as witnesses to the alleged assault, although Ashabi herself was not present during the proceedings.

Additionally, the police accused the singer of obstructing and assaulting a female police officer, Inspector Ogungbe Olayemi, while she was carrying out her official duties.

The presiding judge declined to grant Portable bail, citing the absence of the allegedly assaulted police officer in court. The judge ruled that the officer must be present before bail could be considered.

As a result, Portable was remanded in custody, with the court fixing January 19, 2026, for a fresh bail hearing.

Opinion & Analysis

Portable’s latest legal troubles underline a troubling pattern that has followed the singer throughout his career—talent frequently overshadowed by controversy. While he enjoys a loyal fan base and undeniable street credibility, repeated brushes with the law continue to raise questions about discipline, accountability and personal growth.

The court’s refusal to grant bail also sends a strong message about the seriousness of the allegations, particularly those involving assault on law enforcement officers. In an industry where celebrity status often blurs the line between privilege and responsibility, this case serves as a reminder that fame does not place anyone above the law.

As the legal process unfolds, many observers will hope this moment becomes a turning point for the singer. Whether Portable chooses reflection and reform, or continues on a confrontational path, could define not just his career, but his legacy beyond the music.
