AFCON 2025: Frank Onyeka Sends Bold Warning Ahead of Super Eagles’ Quarter-Final Clash

AFCON 2025: Frank Onyeka Sends Bold Warning Ahead of Super Eagles’ Quarter-Final Clash

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has sent a clear and confident message to Nigeria’s potential opponents ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals, insisting that the team is not bothered about who they face next.

Speaking after Nigeria’s emphatic 4-0 demolition of Mozambique in the Round of 16 on Monday night, the Brentford star made it clear that the Super Eagles’ mindset is firmly inward-looking.

Nigeria will face the winner of the Round of 16 tie between Algeria and DR Congo, who are set to clash on Tuesday evening. However, Onyeka says the identity of the opponent is irrelevant to the Nigerian camp.

“I don’t care what opponent. We are just focusing on ourselves,” Onyeka said during his post-match interview at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.

Asked about his physical condition ahead of the quarter-final this weekend, the midfield engine offered more good news for Nigerians.

“I’m fully fit,” he added.

Opinion: The Mentality of Champions

Onyeka’s words may sound simple, but they reveal something deeper: a team growing in belief and maturity. In past tournaments, Nigeria have sometimes been guilty of overthinking opponents or playing with fear against big names. This time, the Super Eagles appear different—calm, confident, and fully aware of their own quality.

Saying “we focus on ourselves” is not arrogance; it’s a sign of tactical discipline and mental strength. Whether it’s Algeria’s pedigree or DR Congo’s physicality, Onyeka’s stance suggests Nigeria are ready to impose their game rather than react to others.

Equally encouraging is his confirmation of full fitness. Onyeka’s energy, ball-winning ability, and relentless pressing have been vital to Eric Chelle’s system, and having him fit at this stage is a major boost.

If this mindset continues—focused, fearless, and united—the Super Eagles will not just be contenders in this AFCON; they will be genuine favourites. And as Onyeka has made clear, whoever stands in their way had better be ready.
