Elections in Nigeria are not lost on the day. They are often lost in the months before, when the people who organise them are threatened.
What should happen
A prompt, visible police investigation with findings made public. The motive may turn out to be political or not, and it is important not to assume. But Benue has seen too many killings go unexplained, and in the months before an election every unexplained death of a party official makes the next one more likely.
