The National Assembly Came Back For One Day, And Left Again
Abuja · Thursday 1 October 2026
The National Assembly, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas, reconvened after a ten-week recess that began in July, sat for one day, and then adjourned again until 13 October.
The timeline
| When | What |
|---|---|
| July | Annual recess begins |
| Late September | Both chambers reconvene for one day |
| 13 October | Next scheduled sitting |
Adjournments of this kind are often announced at short notice.
Lawmakers are paid to sit. The calendar says they are mostly not sitting.
The election factor
With primaries over and campaigns starting, many legislators are focused on their own re-election. That is understandable and it is also exactly when oversight tends to collapse. Nigerians are entitled to ask what the Assembly will do with the weeks before the campaign fully swallows it, starting on 13 October.
