Amaechi Says The ADC Leaders Will Retire If Tinubu Wins
Abuja · Thursday 1 October 2026
Rotimi Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate, has told ADC leaders that they will all be retired from politics if President Bola Tinubu's All Progressives Congress wins the 2027 election. He urged them to go all out in their states to make sure Tinubu loses.
Why say it out loud
It is a motivational line, but it is also an honest one. The ADC's leadership is built largely from former ministers, governors and party chiefs who left other parties. A second defeat would leave most of them without a platform, an office or a path back, and Amaechi is telling them the stakes in personal terms.
| The ADC ticket | |
|---|---|
| Presidential candidate | Atiku Abubakar |
| Running mate | Rotimi Amaechi |
| Campaign deputy chairman | Nasir El-Rufai, in detention |
Three men who all served at the top of previous governments.
"If APC wins, we are retired." It may be the most honest sentence of the campaign so far.
The Rivers collision
Amaechi and Nyesom Wike, now Tinubu's FCT minister, have fought over Rivers for years. Wike has just pledged to resign if Tinubu loses Rivers. Amaechi needs to win it. Whatever happens nationally, that state will be one of the fiercest contests of 2027.
