Wike Says He Will Resign If Tinubu Loses The FCT And Rivers
Abuja · Thursday 1 October 2026
Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has said he will resign from the cabinet if President Bola Tinubu fails to win both the FCT and Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election. Political appointees, he argued, should accept responsibility for the results in their areas of influence.
A promise with a very clear target
Wike is the most powerful political figure in Rivers, and he runs the capital. Tying his job to both places is a statement of confidence, and a warning to everyone else in those two places about how hard he intends to work for the President.
| Wike and the 2027 campaign | |
|---|---|
| Campaign director-general role | Turned down |
| His stated reason | Previous DGs lost their home states |
| His example | Rotimi Amaechi, Buhari's DG, who lost Rivers |
| His new pledge | Resign if Tinubu loses the FCT and Rivers |
Amaechi is now the ADC's vice-presidential candidate, campaigning against Tinubu.
Wike has made his own job the stake. In Rivers, that may be the most effective campaign message the APC has.
What it tells the opposition
The FCT has voted against the ruling party before. Rivers has a long history of contested results. Wike has now made both personal. For the ADC, with Amaechi on its ticket, that turns Rivers into a direct contest between the two men who have run the state's politics for two decades.
