The 2025 Budget Has Been Extended Again, To December
Abuja · Thursday 1 October 2026
President Bola Tinubu has signed into law a bill extending the implementation of the 2025 budget to 31 December 2026. It means Nigeria's 2025 capital budget will run for the whole of the following year, alongside the 2026 budget.
How it got here
| When | What happened to the 2025 capital budget |
|---|---|
| Original deadline | End of 2025 |
| First extension | Into 2026, to 31 March |
| April 2026 | Extended from 31 March to 30 June 2026 |
| Now | Extended to 31 December 2026 |
The April extension was signed alongside the N68.32 trillion 2026 budget.
A budget that needs two years to spend is a budget that was never really funded in the first year.
The critics' case
The Guardian carried the view that the extension shows the government's failure to execute its own spending plans. That is harsh but not unfair. Running overlapping budgets has become routine in Nigeria, and it makes it very hard for anyone, including the National Assembly, to check what was promised against what was built.
What would fix it
Releasing capital funds on schedule in the first half of the year, and publishing project-by-project completion figures. Without that, every extension looks like a way to avoid admitting that the money is not there, and the President's new promise to cut the cost of living depends on exactly the roads and storage this money is meant to build.
