Rodri Faces Possible Ban After Referee Comments in Spurs Draw
Manchester City midfielder Rodri could face disciplinary action after being charged by The Football Association over comments he made following his team’s 2–2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on February 1.
City appeared in control during the first half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, taking a 2–0 lead through goals from Ryan Cherki in the 11th minute and Antoine Semenyo in the 44th minute. However, Spurs mounted a comeback in the second half, with Dominic Solanke scoring twice — including a spectacular scorpion kick — to secure a draw.
Controversy surrounded Solanke’s first goal, which was allowed after a VAR review despite City players believing there had been a foul on Marc Guéhi in the build-up. Rodri was visibly frustrated during the match and later criticised officiating standards in a post-match interview, stating that referees “need to be fair.”
The FA subsequently charged the Spanish international, alleging he acted improperly by making comments that implied bias or questioned the integrity of match officials, contrary to FA Rule 3.1. Rodri has been given until February 18 to respond to the charge.
The situation comes at a crucial moment in the Premier League title race, with Manchester City currently four points behind leaders Arsenal. Any suspension could be a significant setback to their championship ambitions.
Opinion: Passion vs Professional Boundaries
Rodri’s reaction highlights the emotional intensity of elite football, particularly when refereeing decisions appear controversial. Players invest enormous effort into matches, and frustration can easily spill over when results hinge on fine margins.
However, football authorities also have a responsibility to protect officials from public criticism that may undermine trust in the game. Maintaining respect between players and referees is essential for the sport’s credibility.
From Manchester City’s perspective, the timing could hardly be worse. Rodri is arguably their most influential midfielder, providing balance, control, and leadership. Losing him to suspension during a tight title race could have real consequences.
Ultimately, this case serves as a reminder that while emotions are part of football, professionalism must remain the priority. How Rodri and the FA handle the situation will determine whether the story fades quickly — or becomes a defining moment in City’s season.
