Super Falcons to Face Cameroon in Friendly Double-Header Ahead of WAFCON 2026
Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, will take on the Cameroon women's national football team in two international friendly matches as part of preparations for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations 2026.
Both matches are scheduled to take place in Yaoundé, with the first encounter set for Saturday, February 28, while the second fixture will hold on Tuesday, March 3.
The friendlies will provide head coach Justine Madugu an opportunity to assess his squad against one of Africa’s strongest teams ahead of the continental tournament.
Nigeria and Cameroon last met in a preparatory friendly before the WAFCON 2024 finals at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, where the Super Falcons secured a convincing 2–0 victory.
As part of their broader preparation plan, Nigeria will also compete in the WAFU B Invitational Tournament alongside hosts Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Ghana.
At the WAFCON 2026 finals, the defending champions have been drawn in Group C alongside Malawi, Zambia, and Egypt.
Opinion: Strong Preparations Could Define Nigeria’s Title Defense
Friendly matches are often underestimated, but for elite teams like the Super Falcons, they are critical to success. Facing Cameroon — a long-time rival with physical strength and tactical discipline — offers Nigeria a realistic test before stepping onto the continental stage.
The decision to schedule two matches instead of one is particularly smart. It allows the coaching crew to experiment with tactics, evaluate squad depth, and build team chemistry — factors that often determine success in tournament football.
Nigeria remains Africa’s most successful women’s football nation, but the gap between teams is narrowing. Countries like Zambia, Morocco, and South Africa have invested heavily in women’s football, making preparation more important than ever.
For fans, these matches are also about confidence. Victories against strong opposition can build momentum and belief, while exposing weaknesses early provides time to fix them before the tournament begins.
If the Super Falcons approach these friendlies with seriousness and tactical discipline, they could enter WAFCON 2026 not just as defending champions — but as favourites with authority.
And in football, preparation often separates champions from contenders.
