Adrian Durham Labels Nick Woltemade ‘Worst Signing’ in Premier League History

TalkSPORT presenter Adrian Durham has sparked debate after describing Nick Woltemade as the worst signing in Premier League history.

Woltemade joined Newcastle United from VfB Stuttgart in a deal worth around £69 million, arriving as a replacement for Swedish striker Alexander Isak, who departed for Liverpool.

The Germany international initially impressed, scoring five goals in his first 10 appearances for the Magpies. However, his form has dipped significantly in recent months, managing just one goal in 17 matches this year. In recent games, Woltemade has even been deployed deeper in central midfield — a tactical shift that has raised eyebrows among supporters.

Speaking as quoted by Metro, Durham said:
“Nick Woltemade, I am going to say this that he is the worst signing in Premier League history. This is not anything against him, it is not personal – I hear he is a very good teammate.

“But £65-70 million for one of those, and we have got to delve deeper. I was in Newcastle the other night for the Qarabag game… Their expensive striker needs goals, and he starts in central midfield.”

Durham’s criticism follows recent comments from Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, who also questioned the striker’s performances.

Opinion: Too Harsh, Too Soon?

While criticism is part of modern football, labeling a player the “worst signing in Premier League history” feels excessive — especially for a 24-year-old still adapting to a new league and the weight of a hefty transfer fee.

Yes, £69 million brings enormous expectations. And yes, a striker’s primary currency is goals. But context matters. Tactical adjustments, team dynamics, injuries, and confidence all influence a player’s output. Being played in central midfield suggests the issue may not rest solely on Woltemade’s shoulders.

The Premier League has seen numerous high-profile signings struggle initially before rediscovering form. Writing off a player so early can intensify pressure rather than encourage improvement.

For Newcastle, the key question is whether the system suits Woltemade’s strengths. For the player, resilience will be crucial. Football careers are rarely linear — dips in form are part of the journey.

Rather than branding him a historic failure, perhaps patience and tactical clarity would offer a fairer verdict. After all, in football, narratives can change as quickly as a goal drought ends.
