Olayode Juliana Denies Rift with Funke Akindele, Shares Personal Beliefs on Purity and Acting Choices

Olayode Juliana Denies Rift with Funke Akindele, Shares Personal Beliefs on Purity and Acting Choices

Nollywood actress Olayode Juliana, popularly known as Toyo Baby, has set the record straight on her relationship with fellow industry veteran Funke Akindele, dismissing rumours of any feud between them.

Speaking with BBC Pidgin, Olayode described Funke as a mentor and a figure she deeply respects and loves. “Funke Akindele, she’s somebody I really respect and love. You know, I look up to her. She’s an amazing human being,” she said. She likened their bond to that of a mother and child within the Nollywood space, emphasizing that their relationship is strong and harmonious: “So me and Funke Akindele are like mother to child, like industry mother to me. So no lele, no yawa, no nothing. Nothing dey!”

Olayode also opened up about her personal choices as an actress, particularly her decision to avoid kissing scenes in films. She explained that this is rooted in her values and beliefs, noting that she would only consider such roles if it involved her real-life husband — a scenario she says is unlikely, as she does not intend to marry an actor.

Reflecting on her journey in the industry, the actress admitted that she was once deeply affected by negative comments when she first started. Over time, however, she has grown resilient, learning to ignore baseless criticism. “Until you see me for real hold my shirt or slap my face, by that time, I’ll know you’re dragging me,” she said.

Olayode also spoke passionately about her personal stance on purity, expanding its meaning beyond sexual behaviour. “I believe personally, say, the life of purity is the life where God don call all of us to live,” she explained. She emphasized that purity encompasses character, finances, work ethics, and even governance — suggesting that true purity is a holistic lifestyle choice.

Opinion: Integrity and Boundaries in Nollywood

Olayode Juliana’s candid interview offers an insightful lesson on navigating the pressures of Nollywood while maintaining personal integrity. Her decision to avoid kissing scenes reflects a strong sense of boundaries, demonstrating that actors can uphold their beliefs without compromising career opportunities.

Moreover, her clarification regarding Funke Akindele highlights the importance of addressing rumours directly, especially in an industry where perceptions often spread faster than facts. By openly acknowledging her respect and admiration for a mentor, she reinforces the idea that professional relationships can be rooted in mutual support rather than competition.

Her reflections on purity are particularly commendable, challenging the narrow, sexualized view often applied to public figures. By framing purity as a comprehensive approach to life — encompassing ethics, professionalism, and character — Olayode encourages young actors and fans alike to consider integrity as a guiding principle in all aspects of life.

In an industry often criticized for moral compromise, Olayode’s stance serves as a reminder that success need not come at the expense of personal values — and that setting boundaries can coexist with both professionalism and respect.
