Rivers United Return to Top as Finidi George Praises Controlled Win

Rivers United Return to Top as Finidi George Praises Controlled Win

Rivers United climbed back to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League table after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Plateau United on Sunday.

The decisive moment came early in the matchday 34 encounter at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, when Wisdom Samuel struck in the 10th minute, finishing off a well-worked assist from Taofeek Otaniyi.

Rivers United technical adviser Finidi George expressed satisfaction with his team’s display, describing it as a controlled and comfortable performance.

“We didn’t suffer much… it was a game that we controlled properly, not too much stress at the back. We didn’t create much too,” Finidi said after the match.

He added that while chances were limited, the overall performance and result were enough to please the coaching crew.

The Port Harcourt side will now turn attention to their next fixture against Kano Pillars as the title race intensifies.

🧠 Opinion: Winning Smart Might Be Rivers United’s Biggest Strength

Not every victory needs to be flashy — and Rivers United proved that.

In a league where pressure is high and margins are tight, sometimes control matters more than creativity. Finidi George’s side may not have created a lot of chances, but they did what champions often do: score early, stay organised, and protect the lead.

This kind of performance shows maturity.

However, there’s also a small warning hidden in Finidi’s own words. Not creating enough chances could become a problem in tougher matches, especially against teams that won’t allow early control or may punish limited attacking output.

As the season enters its final stretch, balance becomes crucial. Defensive solidity is important, but so is the ability to dominate games more convincingly.

For now, though, Rivers United have done the most important thing — they’re back on top.

And at this stage of the season, results matter more than style.
