Finidi Admits Rivers United Struggled Despite Narrow Win Over Wikki Tourists

Rivers United technical adviser, Finidi George, has admitted that his side endured a difficult outing despite securing a 1–0 victory over Wikki Tourists in their Matchday 17 clash.

The Pride of Rivers claimed all three points at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt, on Monday, with Taofeek Otaniyi scoring the decisive goal in what turned out to be a tense and cagey encounter.

Speaking after the match, Finidi was refreshingly honest in his assessment, conceding that his team did not perform to the expected standard.

“I can’t really see where the game was moving to, it was off and on throughout,” Finidi said in his post-match interview. “We are quite happy with the victory but the game proper, we can’t actually see where we controlled the game.

“After the impressive performance against Plateau United, coming back home we struggled against Wikki Tourists.”

Winning Ugly Still Counts

While Rivers United may not have dominated proceedings, the ability to grind out results is often what separates title contenders from the rest. In a league as competitive as the NPFL, not every win will come with flowing football—and Finidi’s men proved they can secure points even on off days.

However, the coach’s candid remarks also highlight a potential concern. Struggling at home, especially after an impressive away performance, suggests inconsistency that could become costly as the season progresses.

Still, three points remain three points. For Rivers United, this victory reinforces their resilience, while Finidi’s openness sends a positive message of accountability and ambition. If the team can pair this fighting spirit with improved control and creativity, they may yet turn narrow wins into commanding performances.

For now, the result keeps them moving forward—but the performance leaves room for growth.
