CAF Explains Delay of 2026 WAFCON, Says Decision Aimed at Ensuring Quality Tournament

CAF Explains Delay of 2026 WAFCON, Says Decision Aimed at Ensuring Quality Tournament

Confederation of African Football has clarified the reasons behind the postponement of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), stating that the move was necessary to guarantee optimal conditions for the competition.

The tournament, initially scheduled to kick off on March 17, has now been rescheduled to run from July 25 to August 16.

Speaking on SuperSport’s Soccer Africa, CAF’s acting Secretary-General Samson Adamu admitted that the decision was not an easy one but emphasized that external challenges made it difficult to stage the tournament at the earlier date.

“The reason we delayed the WAFCON was that there were circumstances beyond us at the time that wouldn’t permit us to have the best competition possible,” Adamu said.

He also pointed to the need to build on the success of the recent men’s Africa Cup of Nations, stressing that the women’s tournament deserves to be organised under equally high standards.

Opinion: Right Decision, But Timing Matters

CAF’s reasoning makes sense—no major tournament should be rushed at the expense of quality. Ensuring proper facilities, logistics, and preparation ultimately benefits players, teams, and fans alike.

However, postponements always come with consequences. Teams structure their training, travel plans, and player fitness cycles around fixed schedules. Changing dates can disrupt momentum and create uncertainty, especially for smaller federations with limited resources.

At a broader level, this also highlights the ongoing challenge of giving women’s football the same level of planning and stability as the men’s game. While CAF’s intention to deliver a top-quality tournament is commendable, consistent scheduling is equally important for the growth of the sport.

In the end, the success of the rescheduled WAFCON will determine whether the delay was justified. If the tournament delivers on quality and organization, the decision will be seen as necessary. If not, questions will remain about whether the disruption was worth it.
