Arsenal Hit by Saka, Timber Absence for Sporting Clash as Arteta Welcomes Key Returns

Arsenal will be without key duo Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber for their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie against Sporting CP.

Both players were absent during Arsenal’s recent 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Southampton, and manager Mikel Arteta has now confirmed they will not be available for Tuesday’s crucial encounter in Portugal.

“They haven’t travelled. They’re not ready yet,” Arteta said.
“Hopefully, they’re going to be ready for the weekend if everything goes well.”

Despite the setback, Arsenal have received a timely boost with the availability of Declan Rice, Gabriel Magalhães, and Leandro Trossard, all of whom are fit to feature.

Arteta acknowledged the impact of recent injuries on his squad, stressing the need for a quick turnaround as Arsenal navigate a demanding phase of the season.

“That’s a massive boost because in recent days we’ve lost so many important players and that’s something that we need to change immediately,” he added.

Opinion: Arsenal’s Depth Faces Its Biggest Test Yet

This is the kind of moment that defines seasons.

Losing Bukayo Saka—arguably Arsenal’s most influential attacking player—is a major blow. Add Jurrien Timber’s absence, and suddenly the team looks more vulnerable, especially heading into a high-stakes Champions League clash.

But this is also where squad depth comes into play.

The availability of Declan Rice, Gabriel, and Trossard offers hope. Rice brings control, Gabriel adds defensive stability, and Trossard provides attacking versatility. These are not fringe players—they are leaders within the squad.

The real question is whether Arsenal can adapt quickly enough.

Top teams don’t rely on individuals; they evolve when key players are missing. If Arsenal can find a way to stay competitive without Saka, it will prove they are genuine contenders not just in England, but in Europe.

However, the timing couldn’t be more challenging. With recent losses affecting confidence, this match is as much about mentality as it is about tactics.

In the end, this isn’t just about who is missing—it’s about who steps up.
