Senegal to Host 2026 Beach Soccer AFCON as CAF Looks Ahead to World Cup Qualifiers
Senegal has been selected to host the 2026 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations, with the announcement made by Confederation of African Football on Monday.
It will be the second time Senegal will stage the continental tournament, having previously hosted the 2021 edition. The decision reinforces the country’s growing reputation as one of Africa’s major hubs for beach soccer development.
The 2026 competition will carry extra significance, as it will also serve as the qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. Eight national teams are expected to compete in the biennial event, with CAF yet to announce the dates for the qualification rounds.
Senegal has become a dominant force in African beach soccer in recent years, and hosting the tournament again could offer the West Africans a major advantage as they aim to continue their strong performances on the continental stage.
Opinion
CAF’s decision to hand hosting rights to Senegal is not surprising, considering the country’s impressive track record in organizing beach soccer events and its consistent success in the sport. Senegal has established itself as one of the strongest beach soccer nations in Africa, making it a natural choice for such a major tournament.
Beyond the host nation, the competition’s role as a World Cup qualifier adds even greater intensity. For many participating teams, it will not just be about continental pride but also the chance to secure a place on the global stage.
The tournament also presents another opportunity for beach soccer to gain wider attention across Africa. While traditional football dominates headlines, competitions like this show that the continent continues to grow in alternative forms of the sport, with Senegal leading the way.
