Ufere Rallies Enyimba Ahead of Federation Cup Clash, Targets Return to Continental Football

Ufere Rallies Enyimba Ahead of Federation Cup Clash, Targets Return to Continental Football

Enyimba captain Chinedu Ufere has declared that the club will give everything to win the 2026 President Federation Cup, describing the competition as the team's best opportunity to secure a return to continental football.

The People's Elephant will face Gombe United in a crucial Round of 32 encounter on Monday, with the stakes extending far beyond progression to the next round.

The winner of the President Federation Cup will earn Nigeria's ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup next season, a prospect that has added extra significance to Enyimba's campaign.

Speaking ahead of the tie, Ufere stressed the importance of the competition and urged his teammates to approach every match with the mentality of a final.

"In the Federation Cup, we are playing Gombe United in the next round, and we are going to give everything because we want to take the team back to where it belongs — on the continent."

The defender acknowledged that the tournament now represents Enyimba's clearest path back to African club football and insisted there can be no room for complacency.

"The Federation Cup is our only chance, and we are not going to take it lightly. We are going all out. Every game is a final."

Ufere also expressed confidence that the team can overcome Gombe United if they reproduce the level of performance shown in their most recent home fixture in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

"And I know that if we can replicate our performance in our last home game in the NPFL when we face Gombe United, we are going to come out victorious.

"In subsequent games, if we show the commitment we displayed in our last game, winning the trophy will not be beyond us."

A Defining Moment for Enyimba

As Nigeria's most successful club side, Enyimba FC have built their reputation on domestic success and continental achievements. However, recent seasons have not always reflected the standards associated with the Aba-based giants.

The Federation Cup now offers an opportunity to salvage the season and re-establish the club among Africa's elite competitions.

Opinion: Enyimba Must Turn Ambition Into Action

Ufere's comments reflect the mentality supporters expect from a club of Enyimba's stature. The ambition to return to continental football is understandable, but the challenge now is converting those words into performances on the pitch.

The captain is correct in describing every Federation Cup match as a final. Knockout football leaves little margin for error, and reputation alone will not guarantee success against determined opponents.

What should encourage Enyimba fans is the sense of urgency coming from within the squad. Players appear to understand what is at stake—not just a trophy, but the chance to restore the club's presence on the African stage.

If Enyimba can maintain the commitment, discipline, and intensity Ufere referenced, they will undoubtedly be among the favourites to lift the Federation Cup. But with the pressure mounting and continental qualification on the line, the real test begins against Gombe United.

For a club with Enyimba's history, returning to Africa is not merely an ambition—it is an expectation.
