Ferdinand Changes World Cup Prediction, Tips Spain Ahead of France to Lift 2026 Trophy

Ferdinand Changes World Cup Prediction, Tips Spain Ahead of France to Lift 2026 Trophy

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has made a dramatic U-turn on his prediction for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, switching his support from France to Spain on the eve of the tournament.

The World Cup gets underway on Thursday, with Mexico facing South Africa in the opening match, and anticipation is building over which nation will emerge as champions.

Speaking on his YouTube show, Ferdinand initially outlined why he believed France possessed the firepower to conquer the world once again.

The former England international pointed to the attacking quality available to French manager Didier Deschamps, particularly stars such as Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé.

According to Ferdinand, a well-balanced French attack featuring Mbappé on the left wing, Dembélé leading the press, and emerging talents such as Désiré Doué and Michael Olise would be extremely difficult for any team to stop.

However, when challenged to make a final prediction, Ferdinand surprised many by selecting Spain instead.

"A fit Lamine Yamal, a fit Nico Williams and a fit Rodri... Spain takes some beating," he said.

The football pundit admitted that he had consistently backed France in previous discussions but ultimately changed his mind at the last moment.

"I have been saying France every day until today," Ferdinand revealed.

When asked what prompted the change, he offered a simple explanation:

"I don't know, I just thought if those boys are fit, then they go and win it."

Spain vs France: The World Cup's Biggest Debate?

Ferdinand's change of heart reflects what many football fans and analysts have been debating ahead of the tournament.

France arguably possess the deepest squad in world football, with proven stars and emerging talents spread across every position. Their blend of experience and youthful energy makes them a natural contender.

Yet Spain enter the tournament with momentum, confidence, and perhaps the most exciting young talent in world football in Lamine Yamal. Combined with the pace of Nico Williams and the leadership of Rodri in midfield, Spain possess the balance needed to challenge any opponent.

Ferdinand's prediction also highlights a key reality of tournament football: fitness can be just as important as talent. A fully fit Spain squad could be unstoppable, while injuries to key players might quickly alter the landscape of the competition.

With the World Cup finally set to begin, fans around the globe will soon discover whether Ferdinand's late switch proves to be inspired foresight or whether France will make him regret abandoning his original prediction.
