Micah Richards Backs Bellingham to Start for England: ‘He’s the Best Player in the Squad’

Former Premier League defender Micah Richards has thrown his support behind Jude Bellingham, insisting the Real Madrid star must be in England's starting lineup for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With England preparing for their quest to end a 60-year wait for World Cup glory, one of the key selection debates facing manager Thomas Tuchel is whether to start Bellingham or the in-form Morgan Rogers in an advanced midfield role.

Bellingham has already established himself as one of the most influential players in the England setup. During Euro 2024, he produced one of the tournament's defining moments with a dramatic injury-time overhead kick that rescued England from elimination against Slovakia.

The midfielder also enjoyed a sensational start to life at Real Madrid, helping the Spanish giants secure both the La Liga title and the UEFA Champions League under former coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Although Bellingham endured a more challenging campaign last season, struggling at times with form and fitness and scoring just six league goals, he showed encouraging signs of a return to top form during England's final World Cup warm-up match against Costa Rica.

Meanwhile, Rogers has enjoyed a breakthrough season with Aston Villa, playing a key role as Unai Emery's side secured Champions League qualification and lifted the Europa League trophy. His performances have reportedly attracted interest from several Premier League heavyweights.

Former England captain Alan Shearer admitted he would be tempted to select Rogers ahead of Bellingham, arguing that current form should be rewarded.

"I would opt for Morgan Rogers," Shearer said. "Morgan Rogers has been instrumental in England's recent performances, and I would fully support that decision."

Richards, however, strongly disagreed.

"In terms of big moments, Jude Bellingham – Real Madrid, Champions League winner – when England were down in other tournaments, he's been the guy," Richards said.

He highlighted Bellingham's ability to perform under pressure and deliver when it matters most.

"He's had the personality to step up in big moments. I understand the point about Morgan Rogers and I could potentially see both of them in the team at times."

"But as the main No. 10, there's no doubt for me that it should be Jude Bellingham. You've got to put Jude in the team."

Richards went even further, arguing that the debate should not exist at all.

"This is what frustrates me, we've got a genuine superstar in Jude Bellingham... it shouldn't even be a debate."

"He's the best player and he has to start. He's delivered at the highest level, so he has to start."

Experience vs Form: Tuchel's Biggest Selection Dilemma

The discussion perfectly captures one of England's biggest challenges heading into the World Cup.

On one side is Rogers, a player arriving at the tournament full of confidence after arguably the best season of his career. On the other is Bellingham, a proven match-winner who has consistently delivered on football's biggest stages.

While form is important, major tournaments are often decided by players capable of producing moments of brilliance under immense pressure. Bellingham has already shown he possesses that quality for both club and country.

That does not diminish Rogers' contribution or potential importance to England's campaign. In fact, his versatility and energy could make him a crucial asset throughout the tournament.

However, Richards' argument is a compelling one: when the stakes are highest, managers usually trust proven superstars. If England are chasing a goal in a knockout match or searching for inspiration in a tense contest, Bellingham's track record suggests he is the player most likely to provide it.

For Tuchel, the ideal scenario may not be choosing between the two but finding a way to maximize the strengths of both. Still, if there is only one place available, Richards believes the answer is clear—England's biggest star must be on the pitch from the first whistle.
