Portugal Edge Super Eagles 2-1 in Entertaining Friendly as Conceição Strikes Late Winner

Portugal Edge Super Eagles 2-1 in Entertaining Friendly as Conceição Strikes Late Winner

Portugal claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Nigeria's Super Eagles in an international friendly on Wednesday night, denying the visitors a positive result after an impressive display in Leiria.

The encounter provided both nations with a valuable test ahead of future competitive assignments, with Portugal using the match as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria entered the game in confident mood following their 2-2 draw against Poland a week earlier and were hoping to secure a statement result against a star-studded Portuguese side.

The hosts, however, made the brighter start and took the lead through Pedro Neto. The winger found space inside the Nigerian penalty area before firing a clinical finish past the goalkeeper to put Portugal ahead.

Despite conceding first, the Super Eagles responded well and gradually grew into the contest. Their persistence paid off before halftime when striker Akor Adams produced a powerful run and composed finish to restore parity.

The goal capped an encouraging first-half performance from Nigeria and ensured the teams went into the break level at 1-1.

The second half was fiercely contested, with both sides creating opportunities and showing attacking intent. As the match appeared destined to end in a draw, Portugal found a moment of brilliance to separate the two teams.

Francisco Conceição cut inside and unleashed a superb curling effort that beat the Nigerian goalkeeper and found the back of the net, handing the hosts a late winner.

The victory gives Portugal a confidence boost ahead of their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against the Democratic Republic of Congo next Wednesday.

Defeat, But Plenty of Positives for Nigeria

While the result will disappoint Nigerian supporters, the performance itself offers several reasons for optimism.

Facing one of Europe's strongest national teams away from home is never an easy task, yet the Super Eagles showed resilience, attacking ambition, and an ability to compete with elite opposition for long periods.

Akor Adams' goal was particularly encouraging, demonstrating the attacking quality available to head coach Éric Chelle as he continues to build his squad.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the match is that Nigeria were not overwhelmed. Unlike the previous meeting between the two nations, which ended in a heavy defeat, the Super Eagles matched Portugal in many phases of the game and were only undone by a moment of individual brilliance.

For Chelle and his players, the focus will now shift from the result to the lessons learned. Competitive friendlies against top-ranked teams are designed to expose strengths and weaknesses, and Nigeria will undoubtedly benefit from the experience.

Although Portugal walked away with the victory, the Super Eagles can take pride in a spirited display that suggested they are continuing to move in the right direction despite the narrow defeat.
