Emmanuel Petit Urges Chelsea to Let Enzo Fernandez Leave Amid Real Madrid Interest
Former Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has claimed that Enzo Fernandez appears eager to leave Stamford Bridge and believes the club should not stand in the way if the Argentine decides to move on.
Petit made the remarks while discussing Chelsea's squad situation following the arrival of new manager Xabi Alonso, suggesting that Fernandez may have grown frustrated with life at the West London club.
The former France international argued that keeping an unhappy player rarely benefits either the club or the individual.
"Enzo Fernandez should go, you cannot keep a player happy if he wants to leave," Petit told BetVictor.
"He did say that he wanted to leave, and he was fined by the club. Obviously, he wants to leave the club. We are not stupid."
Petit went further, claiming that the midfielder may be tired of the instability and challenges that have surrounded Chelsea in recent seasons.
"I think he is fed up and tired with what is going on at Chelsea. It's been a mess this season. Obviously, he is targeted by Real Madrid. Real Madrid desperately needs to get some strong midfield players."
"I won't be surprised if he leaves the club and goes to Real Madrid or somewhere else."
Fernandez, who joined Chelsea after helping Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup, remains one of the club's most valuable assets and a key figure in midfield. However, persistent transfer speculation has linked him with a move away from Stamford Bridge, with Spanish giants Real Madrid frequently mentioned as a potential destination.
The arrival of Xabi Alonso is expected to usher in a new era at Chelsea, with the former midfielder reportedly tasked with rebuilding the squad and restoring the club's competitiveness at the highest level.
Is Enzo Fernandez Really Ready to Move On?
Petit’s comments will undoubtedly spark debate among Chelsea supporters. Fernandez remains one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League, and many fans believe he should be central to any long-term project under a new manager.
At the same time, football history has repeatedly shown that when a player genuinely wants to leave, forcing him to stay rarely produces positive results. Clubs often perform best when every member of the squad is fully committed to the project.
For Chelsea, the challenge is determining whether the transfer rumours reflect genuine dissatisfaction or are simply part of the speculation that surrounds elite players. If Fernandez remains committed, Alonso could view him as a cornerstone of his midfield. If not, Chelsea may have to consider whether a significant transfer fee could be reinvested into strengthening multiple areas of the squad.
Real Madrid's reported interest only adds another layer to the story. The Spanish giants have a long history of attracting some of the world's best midfielders, and Fernandez possesses the profile, age, and pedigree that fit their recruitment strategy.
For now, there has been no official indication that Chelsea are willing to sell or that Fernandez has formally requested a move. However, Petit’s remarks have reignited discussions about the Argentine’s future and whether his next chapter could be away from Stamford Bridge.
As the summer transfer window unfolds, Fernandez is likely to remain one of the most closely watched names in European football.
