Wizkid Has Been Doing This For Fifteen Years

Wizkid headlined the Afro Plus Fest over the weekend and used it to mark fifteen years in music. Fifteen years is a long time in any pop career. In Nigerian music it is close to unheard of.
The attrition rate nobody publishes
Think of the artists who were unavoidable on Nigerian radio in 2011. Most are not touring internationally now. Some are not recording at all. Nigerian pop has an extremely short median career, for reasons that have little to do with talent.

What he actually did differently
He changed sound more than once without abandoning the audience, built a genuine touring base outside Nigeria early, and moved into a position where he controls a meaningful share of his own output. Each of those is a decision that costs money in the short term and buys years at the back end.
Every artist wants the hit. The ones who are still here at fifteen years wanted the ownership.
The generational point
Fifteen years spans the entire arc of Afrobeats becoming an export. He started when a Nigerian act playing a sold-out show in London was a story, and he is marking the anniversary in a period when it is a routine line in a tour schedule.
Artists who last that long become infrastructure whether they intend to or not. A younger act now has a template that did not exist in 2011, which is arguably the more durable contribution.
The uncomfortable footnote
The template is visible. The contracts that would let a new artist follow it are still not standard, which is why the next fifteen-year career will also be rare.
