Osimhen Wants To Play Sporting, And The Scan Says Three Weeks

Osimhen Wants To Play Sporting, And The Scan Says Three Weeks

Sports

Galatasaray's medical department has been specific. Victor Osimhen has a moderate-to-advanced strain of the right adductor and will be out for around three weeks. Osimhen has been specific too, in a different direction: if the coach thinks it appropriate for the Sporting Lisbon match, he wants to be on the field.

One of those statements is a diagnosis. The other is a preference.

What the three weeks actually covers

The three games the club's own timeline rules him out of.

He was hurt in the 3-2 win over Istanbul Basaksehir on Friday, having scored the opening goal before coming off in the 33rd minute. Scoring and then limping off inside half an hour is the sequence that usually precedes a longer absence than anybody wants to admit on the night.

Why a player saying this is not the same as news

Every serious forward says he wants to play the biggest game available. It is a statement of character rather than a medical update, and it is worth reading as such. What matters is whether the club allows it.

An adductor strain that is rushed does not become a shorter injury. It becomes a longer one, with a higher chance of repeat.

The Nigeria question sitting behind it

Nigeria play Madagascar in Uyo on 23 September and Guinea-Bissau away on the 27th. Three weeks from the Basaksehir match runs to roughly the 26th. If Galatasaray push him back early for Sporting and it goes wrong, the country loses him for both qualifiers rather than one.

If they hold him to the full three weeks, he misses the Champions League opener and arrives for Nigeria with no competitive minutes, which is its own kind of risk in a match Nigeria are expected to win.

The decision nobody will announce

Club and country are being asked to share one adductor. Nothing in the calendar forces them to talk to each other about it, and historically they do not.

The honest read is that Osimhen will play when Galatasaray decide he plays, and that Nigeria will be told afterwards.
