Arthur Okonkwo Is Back In The Squad, And The Gloves Are Open

Charlton Athletic have confirmed that Arthur Okonkwo has been called into the Super Eagles squad for the September qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. The 24-year-old came through Arsenal's academy and switched allegiance to Nigeria earlier this year.
He has two senior caps. Both were clean sheets.

Two caps, two shutouts, and a very small sample.
Two matches prove almost nothing on their own. What they do establish is that he did not look out of place, which is the only thing a coach can reasonably learn from a summer tournament.
Why the goalkeeping position is the interesting one
Nigeria have spent the better part of a decade without a settled first-choice keeper whom nobody argues about. The position has rotated through form, injury and error, and every tournament exit in that period has produced at least one long argument about a goal that might have been saved.
Outfield selection debates in Nigeria are about who is best. The goalkeeping debate is about who is trusted, which is a slower thing to build.
What a qualifier gives you that a friendly does not
Okonkwo's two caps came in an invitational tournament in England, against opposition with nothing at stake. Madagascar in Uyo is a different examination: a full stadium that expects a win, a defence he has barely played behind, and a result that decides a group where only one automatic place is genuinely available.
Eric Chelle said in August that he was looking at players outside the regular group. This is what that looked like when it stopped being a quote and became a squad list.
The caveat
Being called up is not being picked. Nigeria's September window is already carrying an injury list, and a coach under pressure to win two matches may well reach for whoever has played the most competitive minutes rather than the newest name.
The useful thing to watch on 23 September is not whether Okonkwo is in the squad. It is whether he is on the team sheet.
