Adebayo Says He Will Take Petrol To N200, And The Pump Says Otherwise

Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party's presidential candidate, has said he would bring the price of petroleum products down to N200 per litre within twelve months of taking office. He named petrol, cooking gas and Jet A1, speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday.
Petrol in Abuja is currently selling between roughly N1,299 and N1,345.

Recent Abuja pump prices followed three Dangote gantry increases in nine days.
An eighty-five per cent fall in twelve months is not a policy adjustment. It is a different pricing system, and any candidate promising it is really promising one of three things.
The three ways it could be attempted
- Reintroduce a subsidy. The most direct route, and the one that cost the federation the sums that removal was designed to recover. The money has to come from somewhere in the same budget.
- Sell crude to domestic refiners in naira at a favourable rate. A version of this is already being asked for by refinery owners. It shifts the cost onto federal revenue rather than removing it.
- Cap the pump price by fiat. Historically produces queues, hoarding and a parallel market rather than cheap fuel.
Every promise to crash the fuel price is a promise to move the cost somewhere the voter cannot see it on the day they fill the tank.
What would make the claim testable
A number, a mechanism and a source of funds. Adebayo has given the first and the timeframe. The campaign period runs for months, and it is entirely reasonable to ask which of the three routes he means and what it costs the budget.
Why it will still work as politics
Because the pump price is the single most legible economic number in Nigerian life. Most people cannot quote the inflation rate. Everybody knows what they paid for fuel this week, and it has roughly doubled inside two years.
A candidate who says he will fix that is speaking directly to the thing voters actually feel. Whether it can be done is a separate question, and it is the one that should be put to him.
