Three Gantry Increases In Nine Days Is How The Pump Price Actually Moves
Lagos · Monday 7 September 2026
Petrol in Abuja is currently selling between roughly N1,299 and N1,345 a litre, up from N1,250 at an earlier adjustment. The immediate cause was three consecutive gantry price increases from the Dangote refinery inside nine days.
Most Nigerians have never heard the word gantry, and it is now the number that sets what they pay.
What a gantry price is
It is the ex-depot price: what a truck pays to load product at the refinery or terminal before driving it to a filling station. Every retail price in the country is built on top of it, with transport, margin and local logistics added.
| Stage | Who sets it |
|---|---|
| Gantry / ex-depot price | The refinery or terminal owner |
| Distribution and haulage | Transporters, by distance |
| Retail pump price | The station, within market limits |
Deregulation moved the first row from government to private hands.
Why Abuja pays more than Lagos
Distance from the depots, and the haulage cost that comes with it. Prices across the country currently range from roughly N1,100 to N1,400 depending on state, which is what a genuinely deregulated market looks like when a country is long on geography and short on pipelines.
Nigeria replaced a single political price with a supply chain. Nobody explained the supply chain to the people paying for it.
The concentration problem
Deregulation is supposed to deliver competition. What it has delivered so far is a market where one very large refinery's pricing decisions move the national retail price within days. That is not a criticism of the refinery, which is entitled to price its product. It is an observation about market structure.
What would actually help households
Not another promise about a future price. Publication, weekly, of the gantry price alongside the landing cost of imported product. That single disclosure would let anyone see whether a pump increase reflects input costs or margin.
Nigerians are told the market sets the price. They are not shown the market.
