Onuachu Scored Twice And Then Went Off Injured

Sports

Paul Onuachu ended a goal drought in the most emphatic way available to a striker, scoring twice as Trabzonspor routed Genclerbirligi. He then came off injured.

On the same weekend, Victor Osimhen scored and limped off in Istanbul. Nigeria's two recognised centre-forwards produced three goals and two injuries between them.

Why the brace mattered before the injury did

Onuachu is a specific kind of forward. At two metres tall he is the option Nigeria reach for when a defence sits deep and the ball has to go into the box rather than through it, which describes a large share of the matches Nigeria play at home in qualifying.

He is also a confidence player in the most literal sense: a striker who has not scored in weeks makes different decisions in the six-yard box from one who scored twice on Saturday. The drought ending was worth something on its own.

The problem with the timing. Form and fitness arrived and departed in the same ninety minutes, ten days before Eric Chelle has to name a squad.

What Nigeria are actually left with

Osimhen is on a three-week timeline. Onuachu's status is unclear. That leaves a qualifier in Uyo where the opponent will defend deep and Nigeria will need somebody who can finish inside a crowded area.

A squad list looks like a selection problem when everybody is fit and an arithmetic problem when they are not.

The pattern worth naming

Both injuries are muscular rather than contact. Both players carry heavy minutes for clubs in European competition and then fly for international duty. Nobody co-ordinates that load, because there is no mechanism that would make them.

Nigeria will manage this window somehow. The question that never gets asked is what the next two years of it look like, given the qualifying campaign runs to 2027 and this is matchday one.
