Rangers Were Held At Home, And The Tie Is Now Away

Rangers were held to a 1-1 draw by AS Sobemap of Benin in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie, played at the Moshood Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta on Sunday. Fidelis Ilechukwu's side started brightly and could not turn it into a lead worth defending.
The second leg is away. A home draw in the first leg of a two-legged African tie is not fatal, but it hands the initiative to the other side.
Why Rangers were playing in Abeokuta
Because CAF's venue requirements are strict and the number of Nigerian stadiums that consistently meet them is small. Clubs regularly play continental home matches hundreds of kilometres from their own supporters, which removes most of what home advantage is supposed to be.
A home leg played in another state in front of a thin crowd is a neutral venue with extra travel costs.
The pattern across the round
Nigerian clubs recorded mixed results in the preliminary rounds of the CAF competitions this week, with El-Kanemi Warriors getting past UDIB in Ikenne. Mixed is the historical norm. Nigeria has produced continental champions and now routinely exits in qualifying rounds against clubs from countries with far smaller leagues.
What actually decides these ties
- Squad continuity. NPFL squads turn over heavily between seasons, so a club often enters Africa with a team that has played together for weeks.
- Travel and logistics. Away legs in West Africa are frequently long, expensive and badly timed against the domestic fixture list.
- Money that arrives late. Continental campaigns are budgeted optimistically and funded reactively.
None of that appeared on the pitch as an excuse on Sunday. Rangers had chances and did not take enough of them. It does explain why the same conversation happens every year.
The tie is alive. It is just being decided somewhere less convenient than it needed to be.
