Kano Pillars Won A Five-Goal Game And Plateau United Got Their First

Kano Pillars beat Niger Tornadoes 3-2 at the Sani Abacha Stadium on Sunday in matchday two of the Nigeria Premier Football League. Ubong Friday and Fabian Nworie scored in a first half Pillars controlled. Plateau United took their first win of the season on the same weekend.

The league nobody covers

A Nigerian football audience can tell you what Alex Iwobi did on Saturday and what Samuel Chukwueze did on Sunday. The same audience will struggle to name four NPFL clubs. That is not a criticism of the audience. It is a description of where the cameras, the money and the newspaper inches go.

Every Nigerian who plays in Europe was, at some point, a teenager somebody had to notice in a domestic league.

What matchday two actually tells you

Very little, and that is the point of a league. The value is in the accumulation: whether Pillars can win five-goal games away as well as at home, whether Plateau United's first win becomes a run, whether the players who scored are still at the same clubs in January.

The structural issue. NPFL clubs lose their best players every window and rarely see a fee that reflects it. A domestic league that develops talent without capturing its value stays poor no matter how many good players it produces.

The measurable version

Attendance, published match-by-match. Transfer income, published per club. Neither is routinely available, which is why arguments about the state of Nigerian domestic football are conducted almost entirely on feeling.

Pillars won 3-2. It deserves a scoreline in the record and a little more attention than it will get.
