Osimhen Is Hurt Again, And The AFCON Qualifiers Start In Sixteen Days

Victor Osimhen scored, and then he limped off. Galatasaray have now confirmed what the substitution suggested: an MRI at Acibadem Hospital found a moderate-to-advanced strain in his right adductor, the groin muscle group, with bleeding and stretching in the tissue.

What the diagnosis actually means

An adductor strain graded moderate-to-advanced is not a two-day problem. Turkish reporting puts the layoff at around three weeks, which is the standard range for that grade, and three weeks from the Basaksehir match runs directly through the international window.

Even in the best case, a player cleared at the outer edge of a three-week recovery does not arrive fit to start two competitive internationals four days apart. The realistic question is not whether Osimhen plays both. It is whether he travels at all.

He is not the only one

Paul Onuachu ended a goal drought with a brace for Trabzonspor at the weekend and then came off injured himself. That is two of Nigeria's recognised centre-forwards carrying knocks in the same round of fixtures, ten days before a squad has to be named.

Eric Chelle has spent a year being told his squad is too thin at the top. This is the window where that stops being an argument and becomes a team sheet.

The part that should worry the federation

Osimhen has now had a run of muscular injuries rather than contact injuries. Adductor, groin and hamstring problems in a striker who plays a high volume of minutes are usually a load story, not bad luck, and the load is split between a club chasing a Champions League campaign and a country that needs him for every qualifier.

Nobody manages that jointly. Club medical staff answer to the club, and the national team gets whatever is left. The player is the one who absorbs the difference.

Chelle names his squad in the next fortnight. The interesting call is not who replaces Osimhen for one camp. It is whether anybody at the NFF is planning for a two-year qualifying cycle in which he is available for perhaps two thirds of it.
