George Ilenikhena Is Twenty, And The Door Just Opened
Lagos · Friday 11 September 2026
George Ilenikhena has hinted at a first Super Eagles call-up, after injuries to Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu opened the door ahead of Nigeria's AFCON qualifiers. He is twenty, based in Saudi Arabia, and reported to be on a salary well beyond what most players his age earn anywhere.
The immediate football question
Nigeria's centre-forward depth has thinned in a week. Osimhen is out for roughly three weeks. Onuachu scored twice for Trabzonspor and then left the pitch injured, though he has since returned to training, which is the first good news Eric Chelle has had in the position. The qualifier window is still tighter than it should be.
The bigger shift the salary points at
A twenty-year-old Nigerian-eligible forward earning heavily in Saudi Arabia would have been an odd sentence in 2016. The traditional path ran through Belgium, Portugal or the Netherlands into one of the big five European leagues, because that is where the money and the visibility were.
| Route | What it buys the player | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-tier Europe | Visibility, a transfer ladder | Lower early wages |
| Gulf leagues | Immediate earnings | Less scouting attention |
| NPFL | Home, minutes | Both of the above |
The trade is money now against a bigger stage later.
Nigerian players are no longer choosing between Europe and home. They are choosing between visibility and cash, and cash has got much louder.
What it means for the national team
Selection gets harder to do well. A forward in the Saudi Pro League is watched by fewer of the people who advise national team coaches, and the quality of the league is genuinely argued about rather than settled. A call-up based on goals in a league nobody in the room watches closely is a different kind of decision from a call-up based on Ligue 1 form.
The fair way to judge it
On the pitch, in a qualifier, against opposition Nigeria will actually face. Ilenikhena has not played for the senior side yet. The salary is a fact about the transfer market, not a fact about him, and the two keep getting reported as though they are the same thing.
