Olympiacos and Basel have both changed coach, and two Super Eagles are affected. Bruno Onyemaechi and Nathan Otele now have to convince managers who did not sign them and did not pick them.

Why a sacking is a player's problem

Because selection is not a meritocracy operating on fresh evidence every week. It runs substantially on a manager's existing view of a player, built over months of training sessions nobody outside the club sees. A new manager arrives with none of that and a reputation to establish quickly.

Who tends to lose out. Squad players rather than first choices, recent signings rather than long servers, and anybody whose best quality takes a few weeks of watching to notice.

Very little, and it is worth being honest about that. Train well, take the first opportunity, and accept that the first substitute appearance under a new manager carries more weight than the previous six months did.

Nigerian football conversation focuses heavily on who deserves a call-up. It spends far less time on the club-level accidents that decide who is in any condition to receive one, which is where most of the actual variance lives.
